From 2 October 2026, Australia's new Student visa rules stop most applicants from including family members in their application. Malaysian students are exempt from this restriction because Malaysia is an ASEAN member, one of the named exemption groups. If you are a Malaysian national applying for a Student visa (subclass 500), you can still include your family members.
What changed on 2 October 2026
The Australian Government introduced these changes to strengthen the integrity of the Student visa program and align it with its main purpose: temporary stays in Australia for study. One key change affects who can be included in an application.
If you are applying for your first or a further Student visa, you can no longer include family members in your application unless an exemption applies. This covers both new and subsequent applications lodged on or after 2 October 2026.
The changes do not affect current Student visas. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules in place when they were lodged, including those that already included family members.
Why Malaysian students are exempt
The family member restriction carries specific exemptions, and one of them covers nationals of Pacific countries and ASEAN countries. Malaysia is an ASEAN member, so Malaysian nationals fall under this exemption.
The full list of exemptions for including family members is:
- Doctoral students
- Nationals of Pacific countries and ASEAN countries
- Fully-funded foreign government scholarship recipients
- Students sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) or the Department of Defence
Because Malaysia is an ASEAN country, Malaysian Student visa applicants are not subject to the new restriction and may include family members in their application.
Can you add family members after the visa is granted?
No. Once a Student visa has been granted, you cannot add family members to it. There are no exemptions to this rule, including for ASEAN nationals.
If you plan to bring family members, they must be included in your application before the visa is granted.
What if your family is already in Australia?
Some arrangements help avoid separating families already in Australia. You may include the same family members in a new application if:
- they were included in your visa or visa application before 2 October 2026, and
- you are eligible to apply for a further Student visa in Australia.
What is still being developed
Two related changes have been announced but are not yet in force.
A new Transfer stream within the Student visa subclass is intended for students who change education providers. Student visa holders who change providers will need to apply through this stream. The Australian Government is still developing the details, and the specifics and effective date have not yet been announced by the official.
Restrictions on Temporary Graduate visa applicants including family members will also be introduced. This reform is still being developed, and the details and effective date have not yet been announced by the official.
What Malaysian students should do next
- Check how the family member rules affect your study and relocation plans before applying.
- Include any family members in your Student visa application before it is granted, since they cannot be added later.
- Use the Department of Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool to check the financial capacity and English language evidence you may need.
- Review the official visa requirements before changing your education provider or course.
Individual circumstances vary. Case-by-case matters are assessed under the Department of Home Affairs' latest requirements. For advice about your own situation, contact a migration agent registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority.
